Internships in the Baton Rouge region
Gulf Coast Social Services offers a wide variety of internship opportunities for students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Social Work and Rehabilitation Services.Particular areas of interest are listed below.
Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC) Internship
This program provides homes with specially trained foster parents. The children in TFC may have physical, emotional, medical, and/or developmental challenges.
Student responsibilities: Responsibilities may include coordination and development of treatment plans, involvement in ongoing training for foster parents, conducting three face-to-face visits each month with the foster family, and participation in Family Team Conferences (FTC), and Individualized Educational Plans (IEP).

Trackers Program Internship
The Trackers program provides surveillance seven days a week to juveniles, with the intent of preventing institutionalization.
Student responsibilities: Students will have an opportunity to assist with the provision of treatment and rehabilitation to juvenile offenders in their homes and communities. This may include daily contact and/or in-home visits, participation in planning meetings, maintenance of case records and fulfillment of agency documentation requirements.

Activity Center Internship
The GCSS Activity Center provides a safe place for consumers with developmental, emotional, or behavioral challenges to socialize and learn. Computer stations, therapeutic games, learning activities, and planned workshops are available.
Student responsibilities: Students will be exposed to a wide variety of experiences. Students will assist with planning activities and outings for consumers, fundraising, and development of workshops.

Day Habilitation
Those programs allow consumers to experience new learning opportunities, including job skills..
Student responsibilities: Responsibilities may include assessing needs, developing person centered plans of care, working with small groups (up to 8) of individuals with disabilities to improve their social skills, and assist program staff on outings to community activities and work observations. Other activities will include maintaining case records and fulfilling agency documentation requirements under the supervision of the Program Director.
